Junta Chief Resigns From Armed Forces

Australian and Fijian media reported that the ceremonies were being held in Suva, to celebrate the end of his military career and the transfer of command to land force commander, Brigadier Mosese Tikoitoga

Julie Bishop, Australian foreign minister, praised the announcement. Bishop visited Fiji last month and has made icy relations between the two neighbours.

In 2012 Bainimarama had promised to begin talks on a constitution to replace one annulled in 2009. He imposed emergency laws in 2009 prohibiting protests and censoring the media.
