The result of the General Election was far from ideal for Theresa May – but at least she hasn’t had to eat any books. The same can’t be said for author Matthew Goodwin, who has made good on his promise to eat his new book if Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour had a successful night.
Since the results came in, the election expert has been mercilessly trolled by Labour supporters for a tweet that he must wish he never sent.
This is why you should always think before you tweet…
I’m saying this out loud. I do not believe that Labour, under Jeremy Corbyn, will poll 38%. I will happily eat my new Brexit book if they do
— Matthew Goodwin (@GoodwinMJ) May 27, 2017
Labour went on to poll 40% – and Mr Goodwin has now dined on his new book, entitled ‘Brexit’, on live TV – marking one final triumph for Labour supporters.
Appearing on Sky News on Saturday, he was asked if he is a man of his word, to which he replied: ‘Well indeed I am.
‘I was surprised that Jeremy Corbyn got two percentage points more than I had expected, and I did say that I would eat this book.
‘Two percentage points makes a big difference, I am a man of my word, so what I’m going to do is just sit here and eat my book, while you guys carry on.’
And he did. Kind of.

While he didn’t take a massive bite out of the front cover, Mr Goodwin scrunched up a piece of paper and uncomfortably shoved it into his mouth.
He added ‘it’s actually a hardback, there are lots of chemicals but I’ve got to get through the whole thing’, before giving a slightly sad thumbs up to the camera.
But the controversy may not have come to an end, as Sky News producer Payam Edalat tweeted that he didn’t swallow the page he was munching on.
