A 27-year-old woman from Cheshire has been convicted of impersonating a man for over two years to trick her female friend into having sex with her.

Gayle Newland created a complex online persona for the sole purpose of her own sexual satisfaction. She was originally jailed for eight years in November 2015, but the conviction was quashed in the Court of Appeal and a retrial was ordered.

The victim was persuaded by the defendant to be blindfolded any time that they met, and only discovered that Newland was actually a female wearing a ‘strap on’ when she took off her mask during a sex session.

Newland has always claimed that her victim knew that she was pretending to be a man called Kye Fortune, which was a Facebook profile she’d created when she was 15 years old.

The defendant also said that there was no blindfold used during the 10 occasions that they had sex in a flat in Chester. She also told the court that she did not try to conceal her appearance at any time.

The two women spent hundreds of hours talking on the telephone and the same amount of time in each other’s company. The victim claims these encounters involved her wearing a blindfold all the time they were together.

Prosecutor Simon Medland QC told the jury: ‘This manipulative, deceitful and very crafty young woman went to such astonishing lengths to control the complainant’s life and make her do the things the defendant wanted her to do.’

Newland was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault and cleared of the fourth count. The jury of nine women and three men reached majority guilty verdicts of 11-1 after deliberating for 17 hours and 25 minutes.

The accused shook her head when the sentence was passed and at one point shouted out ‘I can’t go back to jail.’ A Female juror was also visibly upset and struggled to hold back tears watching Newland becoming distressed.

A personal statement made by the victim outlined how she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder anxiety and depression.

She stated: ‘I feel like a shell of a person that I potentially could be. Relationships with partners and colleagues are non-existent.

‘I am no longer the bubbly, fun-loving character I used to be.’

She added that she also feared making eye contact with strangers.

But she later admitted that she slept with a man several weeks after she made her initial police complaint in the summer of 2013.

Giving evidence in cross-examination by Newland’s barrister, she told Manchester Crown Court: ‘Part of it is because I felt stupid that I had slept with this fake penis. Part of you wants to be reckless and sleep with men. Part of it is just being reckless.
