North Korea claims to have successfully fired an intermediate range missile ahead of the G20 summit this week.

The land-based missile was fired from near Panghyon airfield and flew for 27 minutes before landing in the Sea of Japan, the US Pacific Command said.
Donald Trump was quick to respond to news of the missile, taking to Twitter to ask: ‘Does this guy have anything better to do with his life?’

He added: ‘Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!’

It is believed to be the first since Pyongyang launched several missiles in early June.

South Korea said the missile was launched at 09:40 local time (12:40am GMT) and flew about 578 miles.

It then landed in waters claimed by Japan as its exclusive economic zone, according to Japanese officials.

However, the Russian Defense Ministry has disputed claims that it was a ballistic missile, saying instead that it was an intermediate range missile and that it did not pose a threat to Russia.

The US president had earlier called Mr Kim a ‘pretty smart cookie’.

He had also repeatedly called on China’s leader, Mr Xi, to pressure North Korea to end its nuclear and missile programmes.

The missile launch comes as the leaders of the United States, China, Japan and South Korea are expected to discuss efforts to rein in the North’s nuclear and missile tests at the G20 summit on July 7 to 8.
