Bride Feeds 170 Homeless People At Reception After Wedding Is Called Off
A woman in the US whose £23,000 wedding was called off at the last minute has hosted homeless people at the banquet instead.
Sarah Cummins, 25, had booked the reception at the plush Ritz Charles in Carmel, Indiana.
She called off the wedding, but has not publicly given the reasons. However, she has admitted that it was ‘really devastating’.
However, as the wedding was non-refundable, all of the food and decoration was due to go to waste.
So instead of letting that happen, Sarah contacted homeless shelters in the area to see if anyone fancied attending. Around 170 homeless people were then bussed in for the dinner on Saturday.
‘It was really devastating, I called everyone, cancelled, apologised, cried, called vendors, cried some more, and then I started feeling really sick about just throwing away all the food I ordered for the reception,’ she told the local paper Indy Star.
Sarah had been due to marry Logan Araujo, who had footed the largest part of the wedding bill. Apparently her plan for the wedding banquet had his blessing.
Araujo told the paper: ‘I’m happy through my grief, and also Sarah’s, that she was able to make a selfless and very thoughtful decision in such a hard time.’
Sarah worked with the Ritz Charles’ wedding planner to put together the new event, and then arranged for buses to pick up her guests.
Local businesses also pitched in, donating suits and dresses to the guests for the reception.
One of the attendees, Charlie Allen, said: ‘I didn’t have a sport coat. I think I look pretty nice in it. For a lot of us, this is a good time to show us what we can have… Or to remind us what we had.’
The menu included chicken breast with artichokes and a Chardonnay cream sauce, and roasted garlic bruschetta.
And there was also, naturally, wedding cake.
Sarah was also due to fly to the Dominican Republic the next day for what was supposed to be her honeymoon.
She took her mother instead.
