A gunman has murdered at least 27 people after opening fire in a church in Texas. The gunman walked into the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs and started shooting, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt said.

Wilson County Commissioner Albert Gamez Jr told CNN that 27 people have died and another 24 are injured. A two-year-old child is among the injured, according to the Dallas Morning News.

US president Donald Trump tweeted: ‘May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI and law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan.’

The sheriff told the Wilson County News that the gunman had been ‘taken down’. A witness working at a gas station across the street told CNN he heard at least 20 shots being fired in quick succession.

Other witnesses said the shooter appeared to have reloaded more than once.

A spokeswoman for Connally Memorial Medical Center in nearby Floresville told Fox News that ‘we have accepted a number of patients from the shooting’.

In a tweet, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said: ‘Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response.’

Helicopters and emergency personnel were arriving at the scene, and agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were heading to the scene, the bureau said. A large police presence could be seen outside the church, which is 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of San Antonio.
